Know the Enemy: Termites

subterranean termite

Subterranean Termites

This type builds its colonies underground. They need contact with soil to maintain their moisture levels. A regular source of moisture is critical to a subterranean colony’s survival. Subterranean termites are the most common type in the United States. There are numerous species of subterranean termites – one of the most aggressive and destructive species is the Western Subterranean Termite found in Southern California.

Drywood Termites

drywood termite

This type colonizes in wood above ground. Unlike subterranean termites, they don’t need contact with soil to survive. Drywood termite soldiers have large mandibles (mouthparts) with teeth, and their pronotum is as wide, or wider, than the head. Most drywood termite soldiers and workers are larger than the soldiers and workers in subterranean termite colonies. Alates, or swarmers, have two sets of wings. The front set of wings has a pattern of three or more heavy, well-pigmented veins in the outer part of that front wing. Also, swarmers shed their wings very quickly after swarming, so most all dead swarmer bodies do not have attached wings.

Dampwood Termites

This type typically lives in damp and decaying wood. They require regular contact with water as well as a high humidity level to survive. Dampwood termites are the largest in size of the three types.

Homeowner Tips for Termite Prevention

Termites cause billions of dollars in structural damage every year — and unlike many pests, they often go undetected until significant harm has already been done. Because they work silently inside walls, floors, and foundations, prevention is far more effective than treatment after the fact.

Here are some key termite prevention tips you can address around the exterior of your home

  • Seal Your Home – Perhaps one of the most important aspects of termite control and pest management is keeping your home properly sealed. Rats and other vermin only need a hold the size of a nickel in order to squeeze through and enter your home; seal up cracks and any openings you find along your foundation.
  • Address Standing Water – Standing water is a notorious breeding ground for undesirable insects. If you eliminate these sources of moisture, you’ll have a much easier time dealing with termite control and managing other insect populations.
  • Trim the Landscaping – If you have bushes or trees that are encroaching on your house, insects, pests, and other vermin will be able to use the plant life to potentially enter your home. Trim tree branches back, and ensure there are is at least 18” of space between any shrubs or bushes and the foundation line of your property.

While these tips are by no means a silver bullet, they are definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to termite control and pest management. In part two of this series, we will look at tips you can employ inside your home to achieve the same effects.
